Haar — New Paintings Inspired by Sea and Mist
St Ives based artist Heather McAlpine presents Haar, a new solo exhibition opening
May16th at the Crypt Gallery.
Haar is a Scottish word used to describe a coastal sea mist — a shifting presence that drifts
in from the horizon, softening edges and altering perception. As a Scottish artist now based
in Cornwall, the exhibition draws a quiet connection between coastlines, exploring a shared
atmosphere and relationship with the sea.
Working intuitively, Heather develops each painting through layers of movement and
colour, reflecting both an immersion in the sea and in the painting process itself. The
resulting works evoke the rhythm, energy, and ever-changing light of the ocean — moments
where forms dissolve and re-emerge, much like mist moving across the landscape.
The exhibition will include a series of new large-scale canvases alongside smaller works on
paper, offering a range of pieces that capture this sense of fluidity and transformation.
Haar opens on 16 May – till 29th 10 till 5pm daily, opening party, Sat 16th 5-7pm (all
welcome)
