The inspiration for this show Edge Of Dark formed for me out of the current state of our world both politically and environmentally.
I have been concerned about burning issues for some time and somehow they find a way into the visual work I do. Perhaps artists are ultra sensitive to stuff that goes on around them and inevitably give expression to it in their work.
Some 10 years ago I made images which appeared somewhat dystopian at the time, I did not really know why when I created them. In response to this call out I decided to go back to these pictures and submit them to the exhibition committee. I hope they will find resonance.
The two picture I have offered up contain images which, in spite of their beauty, still covey a sense of alarm. The tiles give a small inkling of inherent political and environmental concerns: EARTH DIVIDED and LANDSCAPE WITH TREES – both have echoes of something pressing but unspecified.
From conversations I have had with fellow artists and others I feel that there is a sense of gloom, disappointment and even fear around and it is possible that this show could give expression to this whilst simultaneously conferring beauty, hope and optimism.
Since writing this earlier in the year Corona virus has been added to all of our worries. It has had a big changing influence on our lives and, in a way, it’s presence has accelerated a lot of changes in our day to day lives and outlook which might otherwise have taken years to form.
We are indeed on the ‘EDGE’ OF DARK’ and hopefully we are not plunging into it. Perhaps it is possible that exhibition goers get a sense of this concern and perhaps it will go a small way towards a better world in which we contribute in our own way to improving it for all of us.
