Profile
Roger Towndrow
2026
My practice centres on drawing. Predominantly working in pencil on paper, I find that the modesty, rawness and limited nature of the medium provides a discipline and structure from which to describe a varied imaginative experience.
I aim to strike a balance of plausible authenticity, while gently unsettling interpretations through deliberate creative choices. Recently this has included referencing faux historical styles, and incorporating my own AI generated imagery to introduce inconsistencies in the subject matter. Using this approach I hope to invite consideration of how we view the natural world, reflecting on the human impulse to hold and study that which is often fleeting.
Current critical discourses around notions of authenticity are often prompted by the emergence of AI. While hinting at this discussion, my practice remains committed to handmade drawing. I enjoy the sense of touch, the need for close observation, and the challenges of developing material skills.
