Profile
Carole Page Davies
1982
In recent years, my work has changed significantly from landscape and environment-based paintings. Landscape and environmental awareness are still central to my life, so it is likely that I will return to these themes in future.
Now my subject matter includes more engagement with global political events, presently Russia’s war in Ukraine and the repression of women in Iran. I aim to engage with the humanity of individuals behind the media images of world leaders, with their hype and propaganda. This involves an attempt to project imaginatively into the psychology behind their actions, similar perhaps to what a novelist or playwright might do in their own media. At the same time, I recognise that I have my own prejudices and judgments, like any human being. Sometimes this proces results in satire, or poses questions to the viewer who must supply answers from their own standpoint.
Acrylic paintings often include collage elements made from layers of free and vigorous mixes of acrylic colour peeled from a smooth surface and incorporated into paint applied to canvas.
