Statement

‘from the crowd I face myself’. “Strangers are exciting, their mystery never ends. But, there’s nothing like looking at your own history in the faces of your friends…

I don’t set out to produce art about one subject or another. I usually spontaneously respond to an emotive thought or feeling. I didn’t set out to be a figurative artist or to create artwork relating to social commentary but over the last ten years or so my work has evolved in this respect.

I painted my ‘Crowd Series’ whilst studying at Falmouth College of Art. This body of work was exhibited at The Sir John Cheshire Gallery in St Hellier, Jersey. Largely influenced by Juan Munoz, looking at crowd forms and relationships. ‘Crowd Series’ http://www.david-chisholm.com (link is external)

My work is concerned with the figure and human form, abstracting contour, shapes and lines. I am interested in isolating these elements. My intention is to make the viewer look at them in their own right; I intentionally remove and disassociate the subjects from their environment. I overlay and merge these shapes creating confusion and complication. I investigate positives and negatives to encapsulate mood, emotion, disposition, association and interaction.
