Statement

Having graduated, as a mature student from Falmouth University with a First in Fine Art in June 2017 I have built up an independent coherent body of work as a freelance print-maker, in addition to the required portfolio for my degree. At University I spent nearly every day of my 3 years in the Print Studio where I learnt all aspects of printmaking including Intaglio, Lithography and Screen Printing; I found out then about the alchemy of this medium (or rather it found me) and I have never looked back! For the past 4 years I have been the Artist in Residence at Goonhilly Earth Station where my prints are on permanent display in the ‘Curved Corridor’ and Reception – I regularly curate and exchange these. This has given me the unique opportunity of unlimited access to the secure Site and a wealth of inspiration. Combining both the amazing landscape of Goonhilly Downs, a SSSI, and the iconic and historic dishes I have produced visual works incorporating industrial images entwined with organic elements. Having spent many hours wandering the Site I consider myself a landscape artist rather in the style of Richard Long where I ‘add to’ rather than ‘take from.’

The artist’s work draws inspiration from the shifting landscape and hedgerows, contrasting with the rugged contours of the West Cornish Coast, where land and sea merge in rhythm and tone, transforming from sunrise to sunset and back.
Through layering, simplification and abstraction, natural shapes dissolve into a language of colour and balance. A time to pause; to sense the essence of place, metaphorical and actual; to translate this emotional response towards landscape and seascape, in all of its openness, wildness and transience, into a visual harmony of form and hue.
Previously work was inspired by industrial and technological artifacts and the changes over time caused by re-naturalisation. The physical nature of printmaking reinforced the mechanics of the process. Combining these skills with explorations into more abstract mark making and colour experimentation has progressed my work into new areas.
