Artists talks with Mark Kermode Sun 19th April 2.00 – 3.30
For our spring show this year we are delighted to welcome Mark Kermode as guest curator. It is always exciting to have a guest artist, writer, academic or critic to curate one of our shows. It allows for our members’ work to be selected from a fresh perspective, generating new dialogues for us as a group of artists engaged in a diverse range of subject matter, style and media.
Mark Kermode is a film critic and musician; a presenter on radio and television; and the author of several books on film and music. He co-hosts the weekly film podcast ‘Kermode and Mayo’s Take’ with Simon Mayo, and the BBC Radio 4 programme ‘Screenshot’ with Ellen E. Jones. His television work includes the BBC Four film documentary series ‘Mark Kermode’s Secrets of Cinema’.
Eye of the Lens Mark has given this show its title. He explains ‘I had number of reasons for suggesting this… it relates to a song by a band I love, and to a series of stories. But it’s mainly about EVERYTHING being seen through the eye of the viewer’s own individual lens…’ Rather than asking members to make work in response to a theme, he asked us to bring what we feel best represents our current work.
Newlyn Society of Artists
Established in the late 19th century by an influential group of Landscape and Social Realist painters, the NSA was originally based in the Newlyn Art Gallery. The NSA is still going strong today as a group of almost 100 contemporary artists who live in west Cornwall or have a close connection to it. It is run by a committee elected by NSA members and welcomes new membership applications. Please visit the NSA website for more information about our artists and exhibitions.
