About

A Todd

My work is a visceral and deeply personal exploration of the human condition, rooted in the experience of being brought up by a single mother in a working-class environment. This upbringing instilled a profound appreciation for love, resilience, and the value of even the smallest, most fragile possessions.

Escaping to the city to study fashion design became a turning point, where I was introduced to the world of fabrics, threads, and textures—elements that now weave themselves into the very core of my art.

Each piece is a raw, layered narrative, dominated by black to evoke shadow, sorrow, and depth, but punctuated by carefully chosen injections of color. Pink, like sunlight behind closed eyelids, whispers of quiet joy and sentimentality, while ochre and orange draw from rust and earth, and blue-green evokes the creeping presence of mold. These colors are sparingly applied, breaking through the darkness as symbols of hope and memory.

The canvases themselves are often torn or frayed, with threads and old strings cascading from their surfaces, reminiscent of abandoned fishing boats decaying on the Grimsby docks. These materials, along with hidden symbolic objects embedded in the work, speak to the impermanence of life and the beauty in decay. Strings and cords attached to the handmade wooden frames reach out like hands yearning for connection—grasping for a past life, an alternate world, or a shared understanding of struggle and survival.

Rough, handmade wooden frames, often salvaged or deliberately imperfect, reflect the industrial landscapes and resilience that inspire the work. Beneath the visible layers, hidden objects and textures invite discovery, encouraging viewers to dig deeper into the emotional and symbolic depths of each piece.

Each object is not just a painting but a moment in time, a visceral connection to the fragility and resilience of life, offering both sorrow and hope to those who stop to truly look. It’s an art form born from personal history, emotional depth, and an unflinching commitment to storytelling through material and texture.
