| New works -
"Currently I am working on a group of paintings that observe the skate ramp at Wherrytown, Newlyn and those that frequent it. The ramp itself could, and possibly is described as an eyesore, a blot on the landscape situated so close to the sea and the promenade. However, I see a beauty in its grubbiness, its poor graffiti, its brutal yet basic structure. It is my aim to produce in paint an unsentimental and convincing representation of a real subject. Skating is an outsider sport, a sub culture, anarchistic and quite misunderstood, it attracts a certain individual and they in turn attract admirers and hangers on. The ramp at Wherrytown has its own community with its own set of rules and form of hierarchy. It fascinates me with its bleak uncompromising surroundings, dark, grubby concrete and stark steel bar type railings that could in turn be read as a form of symbolismthat makes a social or political comment on a society that has no real idea of what to do with its so called disaffected youth. So maybe the location of the ramp is therefore apt with the ocean on one side and society on the other, the middle ground, no mans land ?"
