This series was triggered by a fascination of discarded objects, the inside of a spent cartridge on an urban street, a party popper found on a beach, a collection of old uniforms, dresses and old albums found in the family attic.

In the painting of the objects and photographs, images emerge through abstract passages of drawing and paint and narratives are suggested and developed. The resolved works are ambiguous with the possibility of the spectator reading other meanings that may be personal to themselves.

Working with the imagery of empty clothing has also bought up present and historic gender roles and gender assignments, particularly during times of war, death and separation and sometimes these issues weave their way into the narrative.

I am currently working on new paintings - taking photographs of ‘connected’ news items direct from the television. These images are downloaded to a computer to print as references for a continuing series of work influenced by the original ‘found’ clothing. I like the process of an image ( like the game of 'Chinese whispers' moving from film to television to camera to computer to printer to canvas...This digital process deforms and heightens simultaneously and are strangely emotive. This has created an unexpected way forward for the work to develop.
