Biography

Dr Bren Unwin is a visiting research associate at the University of Hertfordshire. She is a member of the Newlyn Society of Artists and a fellow and council member of the Royal Society of Painter-printmakers. Unwin has a BA(hons) and an MA(research) in Fine Art practice. She was awarded a PhD, and The Chancellor’s Medal, for outstanding doctoral research by the University of Hertfordshire in 2008. The title of her thesis was: Phenomenology and landscape experience: a critical appraisal for contemporary art practice. In 2004, Unwin was awarded the Gwen May Award by the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and in 2009 received a Fenton Arts Award.

Unwin’s artwork investigates relationships that exist between an active perceiver and their dynamic environment. Materials, actions and ideas are explored in association with the technologically mediated character of experience. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is held in both private and public art collections.
